Silver inlaid brass Seljuk Incense Burner

An incense burner made of brass inlaid and engraved with silver, inspired by the Seljuk era during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Sanjar, son of Malik Shah, son of Muhammad Alb Arslan. The incense burner portrays a hunting journey. It consists of a body with three legs and a dome.

The Body:
At the bottom, there is a band of predatory beasts fleeing from the princes. Above, there is a band of swans, and above them, the princes are depicted hunting and consulting, armed with weapons such as spears, swords, and bows and arrows, surrounded by dense leaf motifs. One of the princes’ young sons is also depicted. There are two separate bands, one on the body and another on the dome.

The Legs:
The legs are decorated with leaf and geometric motifs.

The Dome (Exterior):
The dome is decorated with the highest-ranking princes in the state, surrounded by swans and dense leaf motifs. Above them, there is a band of predatory birds. The dome also features ridges and is adorned with geometric and leaf patterns, with small windows for releasing smoke.

The Dome (Interior):
On the back of the dome, it is inscribed: “This work was done by order of Sultan Ahmad Sanjar, made at the headquarters of the great Seljuk state, in the year 490 AH.”

Inside the Dome:
There is a brazier with a collection of wild beasts and dragon heads at the tail, while the exterior features a band of winged animals, such as deer, tigers, and lions.

The Bottom:
The bottom is adorned with a hexagonal star containing winged deer, surrounded by leaf motifs and a group of winged wild beasts
